Romanticism

Always a rebel, Briullov never really cared for the Neo-classical style which his brother practiced, Briullov moved onto Romantic portraits and history paintings. Ironically, he is best known for the painting “The last day of Pompeii” which at it's heart embodies Neo-classicism ideas due to the setting and history of the work.. At the same time “The Last day of Pompeii” exemplifies many of the characteristics of Romanticism such as including drama, realism tempered with idealism.
