Symbolism

Moreau is an artist who lived between many movements of art. In his early years, he trained under Theodore Chasseriau; a painter who was a major artist in both Neo-Classicism and Romantic artwork. In the middle of his life, he was a painter of Symbolic painting, which was a movement much like romanticism, but tended to focus on darker and more fanciful images. In his later life, he became an art teacher and taught many 20th century artist such as Henri Matisse, one of the founders of Fauvism.
