By Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Circa. 1573
Mannerism
Arcimboldo can be considered one of the first true abstract painters, painting dream-like figures in the during the 16th century, about the same time as Titian. Specializing in portraits, Arcimboldo would take people and paint them as items such as fruit, books, or other objects that represented the figure's personality or career. Though exceedingly popular in his lifetime, Arcimboldo disappeared for nearly five hundred years until surrealists painters such as Salvador Dali rediscovered him.
