Big confession

As a follow up to last Friday's introduction of Biggs Darklighter, this time I decided to play off the strange sense of intimacy in the cut scene. While the purpose of Biggs is simply to flesh out Luke Skywalker and help establish plot, the scene didn't really add anything to the film that we didn't learn elsewhere. Although it did give us a little more political information about the state of the galaxy and Luke being torn between responsibility and teenage rebellion, all we really end up with is a scene in which the two characters almost seem to be looking at each other with dreamy eyes. I believe I read somewhere that George Lucas did a lot of takes for this scene before abandoning it. Quite possibly a good thing, as this scene comes so early in the film that a first time viewer might even be tempted to think we will be following Biggs on his adventure, what with that heroic cape of his.
