I've always found it depressing how many truly amazing girls and women out in the world don't feel amazing just because they don't have some guy to tell them they are.
Jane's expression in the middle panel really conveys her emotions quite nicely on this page. Wistful, wanting, maybe a little hopeful, and slightly daydreamy.
And as Blntmaker (and yourself) pointed out, it's a very true bit of teenage (and too often adult) train of thought. Too many wonderfully women feel they need to have some kind of confirmation of themselves to have any sense of self-worth. It's terrible.
Here's hoping Jane can get out of that method of thinking!
