This of course isn't entirely true.
There are a few scattered laughs here and there in the vast ink deserts of “print”.
Notably, 9 Chickweed Lane (see Thorax), Get Fuzzy, some Zits, the occasional Dilbert, and my new favorite newspaper comics BREW ROCKIT: SPACE GUY!
The problem with being thrust into the world of webcomics is that we have literally THOUSANDS of artists and strips out here with no rules to follow for content, deadlines, and audience. The 30-50 comics you find in your paper have been filtered one too many times to find some original and funny works. I stopped counting how many times I've read the same joke in different strips. Last month in the Seattle P.I. I counted three identical jokes by three different strips all on the same day.
The ironic thing is those comics generate their creators money.
Ever wonder how many Penny Arcade quality comics we might get if the real pros all abandoned their paper ships and started making comics like us little guys? I don't know about you, but I'd like to think if Darby Conley was allowed to just go buck wild with Get Fuzzy, none of would be safe.
Just a thought.

Yeah, Pittsburgh would probably try to kill Darby again if he was a web artist. this only makes me worry about pearls before swine.

Not that anybody will look at that page now, but the whole 3-comics-1joke-1-day thing was planned and intended as an April Fool's day joke.

I'd like to think my comic is better than some currently in the papers, although that's not too difficult. It's like trying to beat FDR in a marathon (Ba-dum-pshhh).

I agree with your comments above. Thats one of the reasons why Watterson got out of the business. Now if WE could all just make some cash, that'd be great. And ,PuckTheDuck, I think Watterson is still alive. I hope he is anyway. I bet you didn't think you'd generate this kind of discussion.

ever read "classic rugrats"? I only do when I'm feeling particularly masochistic.

It's funny to see how this particular strip has started a whole serious discussion about syndicated newspaper comics... Very deep, man! Great strip!

thank you squeacky for acknowlodging this. the only reason it got canceled was because Bill Watterson died. which suck.
squeakyreaper at 6:41PM, Jan. 31, 2007
Calvin and Hobbes. The only good Sunday comic that didn't get bad. It got canceled. Jebus, the only reason we get the paper is for comics! Why can't they realize that?!
Shintouku at 3:26PM, Jan. 31, 2007
I have a feeling your gonna get featured. right name, good jokes, art isn't crap = featured!!
Joff at 3:02PM, Jan. 31, 2007
I'd have to agree, most of the comics we get in the papers here aren't that good either.. One of the best we had was called "The Creature Feature" and it got cancelled in favour of a larger horoscope section..

that commnet on get fuzzy is totally true. got some of his books their more funny in a book to me then in the paper. but my all time favorite was CALVIN AND HOBBES. that's what has inspired me to start comic. thous my drawn ones are a little messy but practice makes prefect :)
squeakyreaper at 12:10PM, Jan. 31, 2007
Ever notice how our, amateur even, comics are funnier then Sunday comics and such? They stink. Go read Garfield, then read almost any comic on this site. One of my 'To do before I die' listings is get in the paper with either my rants or my comics (that are in progress right now) so I can reform that junk.
