Dr. Higgins the Inventor
patrickdevine on July 21, 2009
I thought it might be a good idea to do a couple of Higgins-centric pages and I was at a good point to break away from Cricket, Creature and Dart for a while. What has he been doing when he's not actively looking for Creature? Is he any closer to figuring out the esoteric alien technology he captured?
I knew that this page was going to give me a headache. The top-down angle looks sort of weird to me.
I kept forgetting to mention that I did a guest comic for Virginia, http://milkyboots.blogspot.com/2009/07/real-reason.html
check out the rest of her comic, it's cute as hell. Also in case you missed it the Drunk Duck Award for 2009 are gearing up http://www.drunkduck.com/Drunk_Duck_Awards_2009/index.php
if you want to nominate me for some reason you'll be able to do it Friday.

@oldguy: Well, it is getting to a point that it's hard to tell who's manipulating who. That's a good a bet as any I guess.
@Peipei: Unfortunately that's their best bet it looks like.
@usedbooks: Spitting in food is one good reason to always be nice to the waitress. As for putting his hand in warm water you can always dump the warm water on his lap, I'm sure he wouldn't know the difference.
@Zephyrion: Awesome!
@khard12: Doesn't that suck? He's a bastard but he still has the best idea!
@amanda: I've never seen Bridget Jones so I'm having a hard time putting that into context. It seems a few people want to see Ollie come out on top though. Too bad he's a nice guy, it never pans out for them.
@Trevor: The main thing that's great about smaller cons, at least the ones in Portland is that they seem less about the fandom and more about celebrating creators and comics as an art form. And the creators are usually at the aforementioned after parties. You get to party with your favorite cartoonists! For a comics-obsessed psycho like me it doesn't get much better than that!
@Warped: Yeah, I've been wanting to draw Dart punch someone that pissed him off and I figured Ollie was a good candidate to be on the receiving end. Hopefully it's not too obvious that I haven't drawn someone getting punched in a long time.
@Steely Gaze: Dart makes a point of not being easy to read. However it's kind of hard to predict just what he's capable of. The reveal of being Higgins' son ended up making him kind of a complex character, sometime I want to do a backstory on how Dart got to be how he is.
@JNP: Thanks to the text only nature of the internet I'm not sure if that's Fergie or the Beach Boys.

Yay! I totally love multiple viewpoints, so I'll be reading the Higgins-centric pages with interest. (That doesn't mean I'm not invested on Ollie and Cricket! Just that I like to know what's on everybody's minds! ^__^)

I don't think the overhead angle looks bad at all. Makes for a good establishing shot actually, and is especially fun because we get to look at all the things in Higgins office. Now we're beginning to understand a little about how his mind works. Obsessive, definitely controlling, and very eager to discover newer, "better" things. Sort of like the typical mad scientist, but with less mad and more precision.

It's good to have a hobby. If Higgins figured the flying vessel out too quickly, he would just be bored.

Sure, but the creators are also at the larger con after-parties...if you know where to look. Unfortunately, lately those after-parties have been over-flowing with crazy fans that eat up my time to network and mingle with others in the industry. So there's a give and take in there. However, I've even been approached before by people who read my comics at cons and are impressed that I'm an actual and real person - which surprises me, a bit. But you're right: the opportunities and overall "zen" of the smaller cons tends to be more positive and community like, as opposed to cons where people shove and kick each other to get Grant Morrison's autograph....

Wow, you did a great job on this page! I am sad that my city doesn't look so interesting. And I'm glad Higgins hasn't figured out much about the technology - however, it's nice to see that he isn't just a stupid villain. I like my villains smart and crafty.

I want that carriage/car.

Interesting office. All the gizmos... and a rifle. I guess after a hard day of inventing (or building other people's inventions), one likes to do a bit of squirrel hunting.

2nd panel looks OK. How else you going to see it unless hanging from the chandalier. Bastard only wants the Creature for his own greedy curiosity.
Peipei at 10:28PM, July 21, 2009
Lovely page :3. Also, I enjoyed looking at panel 1 :3. You're really good at cityscapes.
