Planetary landing vehicles never do well in atmospheres in scifi. Which is odd because that is what the are for.

Well, planes keep falling an ships keep sinking, after all... I imagine all those cases where everything goes well are underrepresented in fiction.

The brick is probably sturdy enough. The squishy bits inside are another matter.

In some sense, the fact that the ships have that brick shape make the poor weather conditions less bad (though still bad).
