Another beautiful page by Essaybee of FUSION. I hope ENERGIZE fans don't take the “dumb lug” comment seriously–Bob insults EVERYBODY—his sarcasm is part of his charm.
And yes…they ARE in trouble.
Another page by Essaybee this Friday, not Thursday. It'll be worth the wait!
no, no, batman has always used that clear mask thing. he just breathes the same air over and over. not to mention that he nullifies pressure against his body. his powers are pretty specific to only a handful of situations, after all if he had no power at all he would be just a well funded and trained vigilante, instead of a super hero. though his power is the most common power of them all.
It's not really that cut and dry. A lot of characters in BGH are more than just a gag on ONE mainstream comic character. Captain Perfect has a lot of Captain America in him obviously, but he's really based on every powerless Superhero who yet somehow manages to keep up with the powerful folks. So he's Captain America, Green Arrow, Batman, even a little Hal Jordan all wrapped up in an incredibly obnoxious but still totally awesome shell.
But even more than all that, he's based on my real life older brother, who I always saw as being perfect in every way when we were growing up. In that sense he's not even a parody of a comic character at all. He's just based on my brother.
TheRedDeath, when Superdan and Paradox talked in space, I could handwave that away. After all, Bad Guy High is a comic which parodies the situations which arise in superhero comics, so it's a must to have talking in space be a factor in such a situation. If they didn't talk in space, it would be hard to say you took full advantage of the Superman parody.
Of course, if you ever put Thatman on a cosmic mission, you'll have to make him do so without any special equipment because, as everyone knows, Thatman can breathe in space.
By the way, I assume Captain Perfect is your Captain America. Is this a good assumption?
One possibility was Fusion doing energy trails as a sort of "skywriting" but Essaybee thought Fusion would have problems doing that for various reasons. In the end, we treated them like skin divers using simple gestures to get their point across, and Bob's internal monologue with Fusion was a HUGE help for the reader.
And yeah, as Hal Clement once said, some facts are very well known indeed, and to some readers, talking in space can be as jarring as putting Abraham Lincoln in ancient Rome. We're not by ANY stretch of the imagination pleading scientific fidelity, but we can do exercises in imagination without insulting your intelligence.
I had SuperDan and Paradox talking in space in BGH, but I hand-waved that away and said they were on the "Blue area of the moon".

Talking in space always kills it for me, moreso than other sound in space. It's why both cuts of Superman II take me out of the movie for a bit (even with the awesomeness of the Donner cut). The first movie always took me out of the realm of disbelief (even as a kid) with the "fly around the world to turn back time" bit. I was too smart for them, wondering why the people didn't go flying off the planet and die horrible deaths.
But the no-sound-in-space aspect is one of the myriad reasons I love Firefly (sadly, not an aspect that stayed true in the movie). The fact is, I can accept a reality so much more easily if people understand this simple concept. I'm reminded of Star Wars Episode II and its depth charges in space--that certainly didn' help me shut off the reasoning center of mybrain to try and make that movie good.
But I rant. As much as Bob calls him a "dumb lug", he must concede that Energize is pretty quick on the take to realize through simple hand gestures exactly what Fusion is getting at.
I think we're all a big bunch of science nerds which is why you're not getting any talking in space... I think to issue as to how Fusion might communicate with Energize was discussed at some length. In the end we went with a fairly simple, and I think very effective, solution.
look at that, no talking in space. you guys really are smarter than your average modern story teller. though that is much of a compliment, but your story is good and has internal consistency, and is more believable than most other stories out there.
let's see if energize gets the message, and i am still wondering if vector realizes that the energy of energize is sentient, kinda sorta. i doubt that such will come into play, but it would be an interesting twist. also what about the audience that bob is catering to? can they still get their regularly scheduled dose of fusion? also fusion can end this pretty quick, all she has to do is fuse the planet and release all that energy in a big boom. though i doubt she would, as she is far from that cold. i doubt she would try and kill the entire force either, not really in her ethos i think. maybe she should find herself an x-wing to pilot, she would love that. in the end i would suspect that either knowledge that captain perfect has gained or mind mistress will save the day.
What would be even more interesting is... what do Bob's people think of Bob?? Somehow I doubt we're likely to find out in Crossoverkill though. Great page, Essay Bee!
Bob is a snarker, so he's entitled to it. You know he'd never call Mindmistress dumb, though. Headstrong and smug, yes, but never dumb.
When he finally meets Captain Perfect, though, I do onder how much he'll quip about him. The guy was just made for comedy (literally, as he's from a parody series).
Actually, it'll be interesting to see exactly what Bob thinks of all the Crossoverkill crew (we haven't even heard what he thinks of MM and Hoodoo yet). Something tells me he'll see Majestic Knight basically as he sees Brooder, and I actually can't help but think he'd hold Hoodoo in a kind of respect. And I can see Yuuki and Savunn getting along--both are high school students with great power nd still learning how to use it.
Gosh darn it, I can't wait until Majestic Knight and Yuuki enter the story proper. You always want to see the whole team together.
