I like timed jokes. I could have just had the tombstone fall over the second Das hit it. For some reason, it's funnier because of the delay.
This is also not the first time that Das has done the Xena yell.
I usually make it a point to draw each panel, even if two have very similar poses. In this case, though, I just cloned the line art from panel seven from panel six.
Actually, the leader in Beast Wars was Optimus Primal, who was named after the original Optimus Prime but was not the same character, just as Megatron was named after his G1 namesake (or perhaps they both took their names from the same passage in the Covenant of Primus.) The original, G1, turns-into-a-truck Prime shows up toward the end of the second season of Beast Wars.
The next comic will be on time
According to Al, who's good for a rhyme
The next page is set
So the comic will jet
Assuming the next guy doesn't di...cry.
In your pages of scrawlings and scribbles,
We might put some rhymings and dribbles,
It might be the herald,
Of some fine vintage Gerrold,
Who sure knew of the trouble with Tribbles.
The Crossoverlord, oh, so cryptic,
His smile was apocalyptic,
With a blast from his eyes,
To Our Heroine's thighs,
Sent the stars round her skull's blonde ecliptic.
Neil, imma let you finish, but I just wanted to say that Beast Wars...
...is not Sunbow.
The Optimus Prime that I know is a semi-truck whose voice sounds like John Wayne.
*looks at his full 4 seasons of the original transformers... bough for his son off course!*
Maybe I should set aside a couple of days for... "research"?
*writes down the excuse*
The following comment doesn't really have anything to do with this page or most of the comic, but I thought I'd share.
Earlier this week, the website Collection DX posted a podcast review of the hour-long pilot episode of Transformers.
And yes, that's me in the comments making fun of the VHS cover.
Transformers happens to be one of my biggest writing influences, and I was impressed that the reviewers, Mike and Jeremy, picked up on how good the structure of this show actually was, for basically being a toy commercial.
A lot of how I write pages like this one comes from the sort of spirited writing you would find in old Sunbow cartoons, like Transformers. In fact, Transformers is probably my biggest writing influence. I've always liked their approach to writing dialogue, and I've mimicked it to the best of my ability throughout the Crossoverlord and Dasien.
I was just joking around with Al the other day about how these programs were structured, despite the absurdity of the premise. Every scene change was staged purposefully. They didn't repeat information if they didn't have to. Dialogue was always fluid and conversational. It was cartoon writing at its best, and yet it often centered around Cobra Commander and Destro talking about how they were going to take over the world with carnival balloons filled with hypnotic gas, or something silly like that.
The fact that Dasien even called Mindmistress "Double-M" is even kind of a Sunbow-ism. Her relaxed attitude in the face of serious circumstances is an echo of Transformers and GI Joe. As too is the fact that they get on each other's nerves. I can't help but love the cartoon that has the two characters snarking each other while serious evil is afoot.
So, basically my rambling boils down to this: If you ever want to discover the secret to how I structure stories and write character dialogue, just watch Transformers.
"Any other crazy superpowers we aught to know about?"
The Smiling Man has been collecting weapons and technology for some time now and he knows full well how to use them.
It'll be fun seeing how our heroes make it through this. ^_~
At least she didn't lose her sense of humour.
I honestly didn't notice the delayed toppling of the tombstone until you mentioned it...sorry. :p
Really well done page.
Yeah, and four of us got individual entries, like this one at http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Mindmistress. Now, if someone will complete the Dead Debbie and Green Avenger entires (there are pages, with no data) we'll be set!
Some things are worth waiting for... and I count the humor and timing of this comic among them! :D
"I'm okay. I only hit my head"... I'll make a note for that next time she mocks MM ;)
It's kind of implied during his first appearance here at http://lightbringer.comicgenesis.com/d/20061013.html. I admit both his eyes and hand were glowing, but neither is natural, right? He was shown plenty of OTHER times projecting beams from other parts of his body, also. As well as eluding people through non-Euclidean geometry, casually reversing Lightbringer's light blasts, etc.
Eye Beams? I guess that explains how Smiley charred that Security Guard when he was introduced in Lightbringer...Any other crazy superpowers we aught to know about?
You'd THINK it'd be easy, with as many people as we have working on this.
The thing is, I do another three pages of Mindmistress a week---a page of Flickerflame when I can---and I'm working off and on on a Heroes Unite short story starring Bombshell and the Commander about fifteen pages long. (I'm at page ten.) That in addition to The Crossoverlord.
Abby is aiming at two pages of the Green Avenger a week, and Lewis scripts one Lightbringer page a week. Remus is working on a new comic he's preparing, GENOCIDE MAN. Neil's VERY involved with not just the actual drawing, but with the planning and scheduling of CROSSOVERLORD, and hopefully sometime soon there will be new Dasien or Dasien and Energize pages.
We schedule this beforehand, we have an events calendar that we're following, but it got--pretty tight when we were doing two pages a week. (Remember that week that almost wasn't?)
Maybe someday, just not now.
Of course, in addition to The Crossoverlord, that means there are roughly six new pages a week of the individual characters in their OWN books...

Well, we won't need a stall tactic tomorrow---the page is already locked in. So we'll have to do limericks about something else...
Neilsama at 3:30PM, Sept. 19, 2009
I'm amused that a stall tactic of mine somehow blossomed into a meme.

Hey, I LIKE limericks. I won't complain.

Are we going to have limericks with every page now? Is that the way it's gonna be?

"Beast Wars" was Mainframe, which also did "Reboot". That's just about as awesome as it gets.
