He closed his eyes the instant he spotted her. He knows he's after a witch - by definition, female. In panel 6, the Witch is frowning; in panel 7, her lips are turned up exactly when he's looking into her eyes. I give it roughly 90% probability he had his eyes closed due to some form of mind-control power on her part (whether reputed or real).

I would have added SFX in panels 2 and 3 as well. Would have added text in the last 2 panels to pace them better. Example... "[i]Gotcha![/i]" in 6. "...." in 7. I had to read the Reader Comments to realize the knight is hesitating on hitting a woman. If he had said "...." I would've understood it better.

Thoomp sounds more like something involving suction cups than fire – like a looney toons bow and arrow with suction tips hitting a tree. Fire sounds in my onomatopoeia have a 'fw' start. Like fwü for something quick or fwthö~ for something a little longer. Then again, not everyone else is crazy, or has a speech-to-text and the spare time to play with computerized sound effects.
