The Landlady: What Gus Did
Cheeko on July 8, 2007
Gus talks about his achievements like he does his hobbies: they're things he does, but they don't define who he is.
50 points to whoever can solve that problem. I had to borrow my brother's Physics book to look up a few of those formulas. I realize that some of them don't relate at all to the kind of problem that's at the bottom.
Originally I said that I was going to make a comic to clarify the meaning of “invite only” of SCHOOL's application process…
But eventually, I said myself, “Ah, ferget it.” and for a number of reasons:
1. I couldn't think of a way to make the explanation funny.
2. I keep wanting to get on with the plot.
3. You guys know what I mean anyway.
…right?
Bah. If it's confusing I'll go back and really make a comic, but otherwise I'll assume you're all able to figure it out. :)

Sounds like a great name for a book!
Tempest_Lavalle at 4:55PM, Aug. 3, 2007
Hehe, always knew Billy Gates never came up with that stuff on his own. I love the fat man in the diagram XD. Your style ROCKS!!
ceb_dyson at 8:13PM, July 26, 2007
lmao I love his expression when he says the title of the book. Ok, I'm sold on Gus, he's my fav char now. lmao!!

Hmmm... I get different results than DePaw. Distance = Acceleration * Time^2 or T = sqrt( D/A ) or T = sqrt( 563 / 9.81 ) or T = 7.58 s to fall 1848 feet. I've rounded to 3 significant digits. Speed = Acceleration * Time S = 9.81 * 7.58 S = 74.4 meters/second or 242 feet/second in vertical speed at impact. His horizontal speed will be the same at .5 m/s This all ignores air friction.
Dragonaur at 1:05PM, July 23, 2007
There is a flaw in the diagram. Gravity is approx 9.81 m/s^2. That is: meters per second per second. It's the square of time. An acceleration not a velocity. ^_^
The_Jaded_Falcon at 7:44PM, July 15, 2007
Gus could conquer the world and not even care.
edorfaus at 4:50PM, July 14, 2007
(Anyone else notice how easy it is for me to overcomplicate things? :P ) Love the titles, btw :)
edorfaus at 4:44PM, July 14, 2007
Hm, actually, now that I think about it, there's apparently other forces involved than those mentioned in the figure, otherwise x would be 6.4m, not the ~159.4m (523ft) specified. As such, it gets impossible to calculate Vf with just the information given, as the forces not mentioned will have an effect... Well, unless t is the start time, not the time spent falling. If so, ignore this comment.
edorfaus at 4:36PM, July 14, 2007
DePaw: That was my first thought as well(though I didn't actually do the calc), but is Vf really just the vertical velocity, or is he after the total speed (including the horizontal component, admittedly relatively small)? (maybe even the vector?) Unless you include air resistance, the horz velocity won't disappear, but if you do, you'll pretty much have to include it with vertical velocity as well, and should also include things like terminal velocity, and probably other things I can't think of right now...

I think I could figure that problem out, if I felt like taking a minute to do it. Ah, well. No 50 points for me! I love Gus' shirt, by the way.

XD LOL
Eagle0600 at 8:32PM, July 9, 2007
@Wazaga: Gus, the inventor of XBox, not Windows. @Cheeko: I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!!
DJLink at 11:24AM, July 9, 2007
I just looked at the figure and my brain started to hurt...ow.
jiminycricketX at 6:17AM, July 9, 2007
Wow, Gus is not only a gamer, but he's also a genius. Go figure. I love that diagram at the bottom. I have no idea what it means, but it's funny anyway.
ce33 at 6:12AM, July 9, 2007
You should have some formulas to check if the impact from falling creates enough stress to break the man's bones. Excuse me. I meant fat guy's bones. Or his gameboy. Whatever.
DePaw at 5:23AM, July 9, 2007
Ha! lol. Nice problem... anyways the fat kid hits the bottom of the canyon with a speed of 105.08m/s (to 2dp). Took me about 5 seconds, half the stuff you wrote isn't even needed, T=2pi*srt(L/g) is for stuff swinging. It horizontal doesn't factor into the vertical motion as it's gavity that's pulling him down. If you want my workings out: vertically: u=0 a=9.8m/s v=? s=563.36184m (1848.3ft) v2=u2+2as. v2=0 + 2*9.8*563.36184 v2=11041.89206 v=105.0804076m/s. lol. Do I get to go to SCHOOL now?
magicalmisfits at 1:10AM, July 9, 2007
smart guys
Wazaga at 11:27PM, July 8, 2007
Gus, the original Inventor of Windows... YES!!!
Haydee at 10:10PM, July 8, 2007
Ok...That problem made me scream, "AAAAAH!" But, the comics all good and great XD.
