I'm willing to bet he was trained on how to fight vampires super human abilities in hand-to-hand combat, because he seems to be giving as go as or better than he is getting. That or that "spell" Danielle is under doesn't allow for enough free will to use her vampire abilities to the fullest. Just a couple of guesses on my part :)
