Dani can’t get a break. She finally gets to see her long-dead husband and he seems less than pleased to see her. All in all, this isn’t a very happy reunion.

I don't think it's a flashback. Richard rather looks as if Dani's appearance stirred up some painful old memories. This meeting is however not as unexpected for him as it is for Dani, and what exactly does he mean by "It always plays out that way"? I'm intrigued!
