I can buy it, for a bright person like Orn. Before I even entered first grade (no kindergarten in my home town) I could read out loud simple sentences. I had no problem associating letters with sounds. In English, the problem comes with all the various pronunciations that happen with various letter combinations. For example, school. Phonetically, it would be spelled something like scoul or skool. And then there are all the exceptions to the rules, such as "I before E, except after C". Weird is an exception.

I don't buy it not in one day figuring out how to sound out and spell ether name in one lesson it on the own? assuming ether culture has no written langrage it would probably take weeks to get that far starting from scratch. the ideal that marks on paper could make magic words that others could look at and know exactly what they mean would be a huge step in the first place. unless their supper smart like 150+IQ i might see the teacher or his aid writing it down for them and saying this is your mark it means your name learn it or die. I am so surprised their allowed to keep their names. first thing master races do is give the person a slave name or even numbers to enforce the loss of all cultural ties

I'm still not understanding why our heroes are bending to this! Obviously they are being exposed to a technologically superior culture--which gives it a certain 'awe' factor...but our heros/heroine are all technically adults in their culture. Adults tend NOT to take crap they do not like so passively. I KNOW I wouldn't. Detention is a threat only if you are bothered by it...which as an adult I would not be... Maybe I have too much testosterone going here? Kick me anytime...

I have a feeling she'll be finding out about "that place" soon enough. You'd think ALL the names would be strange for a guy from a different culture. I'm not sure how 'Orn' is different from the others, or why it sounds masculine to the teacher...
