The Ad Shirt

This little ‘gem’ came to me while out and about. As a cartoonist I notice things. Epically people. I think every artist is like this. We're all people watchers. We look at the little minor things that most people pass up as common place. Body language, mannerisms, speech patterns, clothes.

It's important to study these things. To know your subject(s). And the more I do this, the more I come to realize that most people I see are walking bill boards. They all want to keep up with the hottest trends and lateist styles and they're willing to pay top dollar to do it. But what exactly are they doing? It's when you look that you see. These people are going out and spending exuberant amounts of moula to advertise for the companies that make them ‘cool’ or even ‘hip’ and sometimes ‘sick’.

You're nothing unless the letters F-U-B-U are scrawled across your torso for all to see. People will not respect you if you don't allow Acrombie and Finch to turn you into a walking product endorsement. And it makes me smile.

You see, my mom is an advertising executive with one of the big guns. I grew up disillusioned when it came to commercials, radio and print ads so I guess that's why I see a problem. That's why I joke about it. Most people look at me with that ‘You’re insane' glare when I bring this subject up in casual conversation. But, most of them have a clothing companies logo stamped on every piece of fabric that occupies their body.

Case in point, companies that exploit people in other countries, often work them to death are making you pay to advertise for them. They make you pay for something most companies spend millions of dollars on. Welcome to my head.
