To be fair, the initial conversation starter from the clerk would have shut down a lot of customers for a valid reason.

That's true! I grew up seeing a lot of guys get bullied for having hair longer than past their ears, including by teachers at school/church, usually with the comment of "you'd better get a haircut otherwise you'll look like a girl" 🙄
