016 Dreadnought: Invasion Six #1

This is one of those scenes where the you get the prep before battle and the tension gets ratcheted up.
I vaguely recall an interview with Roddenberry saying that the Enterprise in “Star Trek” didn't use any “fighters” for budgetary reasons. I can see that. Battlestar Galactica - the original, you had fighters! Of course they used “atmospheric combat” in space which is scientifically incorrect but it was still great. In Dreadnought, the fighters are the autonomous Artificial Intelligence (AI) MDS units or “Medusa”. The battle officer aboard the Battle Cruiser just gives the strategic target overview and Medusa units will tactically analyze the situation and take group or individual action. The Medusa has no pilot so it can literally reverse thrust, flip and re-orient - if done with a pilot, the pilot would be goo.
But first, let get on with the battle briefing…

The medusa fighters make a lot of sense, the AI can handle tactical decisions but strategic thought needs a humanoid mind. ( If the battleships could be automated they would be... ) Another plus is electronic units can be smaller and run at a lower temperature than one with a person in it so they will be harder to spot on radar and infrared... I like the thought that's gone into your comic.

The Enterprise's transporter was invented for budgetary reasons, too. It meant they didn't need models of shuttles to go planet-side. What was that about necessity and invention?! ;-)
