The money might help... but the timing is somewhat less that tactful. Dunno... were it me in that position (and no matter _how_ much you love someone, you will have fights in which you say things you'd do absolutely anything in the world not to have said... and anybody can storm out mad and get in a wreck, y'know?) _nothing_ would help. Ever. The money would help the kids, which would be pretty much my entire focus until they were taken care of, though. That last one caught me at a weak moment and made me cry, too... good work!
