They have to shout the name of the rune as a focus for their magic. If you just said the word, but concentrated incorrectly, it could have the wrong effect, or more likely, not work.

Hmm. Does that mean they fight like rock-paper-scissors, or that she drew after he had announced his draw? And do they have to shout? Or could you shout "shield" but actually have it turn their stomachs into cottage cheese?
