Ben's Book of Banned Beasts- Page 11
hpkomic on Aug. 25, 2007
Well, here we are, the final page of this short Ben's Book of Banned Beasts story. Final thoughts anyone? I'd love to hear them. This was my first attempt at doing a full story with these characters and this concept, and I learned quite a bit from it. For example, the concept is more geared for animation than anything. Secondly, I need to tweak the designs slightly and that it was in fact a really great concept that just didn't win the Comic Book Challenge. It was a long trip because I started this comic to drum up some votes for BBoBB, but in the end it turned out to be more about me saying hey, I told you I have a lot of ideas.
So, I was planning on submitting the concept to a few places and I will be doing another story, but probably not one I'd post online, but rather a short story for the next Nightgig sampler. I'm also going to try working on some one or two page gag-comics with these characters for something else I'll be sending these for about early next year. And naturally, I'm going to tweak everything slightly and submit this elsewhere.
But hey, this is a transition period. I have two comics for you next week, a special one about a certain wandering bear, and the start of the next GHS storyline, did you miss Angn, DICC, Enna and Maxine? Don't worry, they'll all be showing up in full force, including some new faces.
Also, keep an eye out next Tuesday for a very special promo-image for the return of Cosmic Dash. A few select people have seen the a couple of the upcoming comics, and it seems like you guys are going to get a real kick out of Dash. I know I do.

Also, incredibly solid short story. Flawless execution of gags, no noticable mistakes, fantastic composition and color. Hats off to you, sir. With writing like that, you should be making the big bucks and having other people draw it, though they probably won't be as good. ;)

Well, I've already given you my 2 bits. In any event, I think it turned out to be a solid story and well rendered. You've got comic chops regardless of whether you win every contest you enter!

The colors you chose worked for me. As as the amount of content is concerned, I thought this would probably be just one of many different adventures for the characters. In short, I think the whole thing is just fine the way it is. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone has their own ideas as to how they would handle a similar story line. That's why comics are such a wonderful thing. There is so much to choose from.

danthemancartoons: How do you mean solid? I thought for something very cartoony a bright color palette would make sense, I don't see how that exactly ties into being artificial and lacking substance. GHS has brighter, if not more clashing colors. As for the meteor thing, that I can understand, I did the best I could on short notice considering I was making this to show up alongside the voting process for the Comic Book Challenge, if I had had more time, I'd of really put my editing hammer to this to really bring it up. I guess I just made the mistake of assuming it worked fine enough, considering I was under pressure at the time for a contest I ended up losing anyway. :P I am going to do more BBoBB though, the project is much too fun and rich to set aside. Personally, I am proud of this story for being the first one I've done with these characters. It may not be on par with GHS, but when is anything that's just starting up as polished as something that's been moving along for a while, right? Besides, I have all the time in the world to do more with them.

Things like the fire and lettering sound effects just didn't seem solid enough for me. That combined with the very bright colour palette made it all feel rather artificial and lacking substance. It was never clear for me what was happening with the meteors. In my mind, no-where near as solid a GHS.

Ozone, I assume your comment is in regard to final thoughts. In the case of this story, I didn't want to dwell on any subplots, I just wanted from point A to point B. This story was just too short for a secondary storyline, you know? I didn't want to complicate things, and overall, it went rather smoothly plot-wise. Your suggestion is duly noted of course, and it's already happening in Cosmic Dash and GHS. With this format of pages I'll be running with in the future, instead of one update a week you'll be getting two, so it'll be much faster and it'll feel like a lot more is happening even though the pages are actually shorter.
Ozoneocean at 10:16PM, Aug. 25, 2007
I would say... More happening on each page... Like subplots going on at the same time in a page, you know what I mean? Ian Jay is good at that, Eggbert too. (I wish I was -_-). For a funny story like this it gives it more bulk, power and interest value. Apart from that, great comic, coll concept and cool artwork.
