I may have gone over board with Dyonus's injuries…they were a lot of fun to draw, though.

As you can see, the droid chest cavities are hollow, with the exception of minor motors (not shown) that control joints such as the neck, waist, and arms. Also, there are wires that allow control and carry electricity to the different servos.

Anyway…the point is that the chest is relatively empty. The power supply as well as the processor and hard drive are in the head. A decapitated droid head would still function provided it didn't short out.
