The truth behind poltergeists is pretty interesting actually and DOES have to do with teens- This was an idea popularised by teens who were going through mischievous, rebellious phases. They'd play tricks on their gullible families, fooling them that they were being haunted, mainly as a way to get attention. I think it's a case of a child growing up enough to lose their awe and respect of their parents but still childish enough to want attention and to play sill tricks, while the parents still think of them as little kids and don't believe they would pull such nasty pranks so they think the ghost idea must be true.
