A brief explanation of Japanese comedy
Jonko on March 16, 2009
A short one. I made this in response to a friend who told me she just did NOT understand Japanese comedy. This is basically what it is, over and over again.
Anyway happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!!! Went to Hub today, a local British Pub (not really, but they claim they are). Lots of crazy gaijin (foreigners) in town that shouted at my friends and I, it was nice shouting back at people in English, haven't done that in a while!

That's how it works here in the states too.

Ah, Manzai. I think it can be a little funny, but they should probably try to break away from this model - it IS rather common. Mind you, I think it's better when there are two people going at it rather than one comedian with a great big long monologue. Many comedians can't really pull off solo work. :/

hilarious! I've never watched Japanese comedy but now i know...to stay away from it.

Well, I don't know what comedy shes into. When I watch some Jap-comedy shows on youtube, I'd burst out laughing. I especially like the jokes you guys pull with the porta potty ones. Those pranks are awesome. '(Brain Wall) Human tetris' is also a good one. America took the trademark and renamed it the "Hole in the Wall" If anything, I think we steal most of Japans jokes. Guys getting slapped in the nuts with steel-metal is pure win!

You hit the nail on the head with this!!!! Most comedy here is to "Keystone Cops" for me.. But I do like 99... The Hub... went there (Hachioji) with a couple of other DDers this last summer... the pitchers hold more than the yards.... but the yards look cooler!
