Originally, this was going to just be a bunch of teenagers throwing eggs at the old man's house, finally throwing a rock through his window. But once I added the Charlie Brown homage, I realized that Jeffrey, the complete jerk that he is, would likely take vengence upon the old man and break a window.
The thumps, therefore, were probably him repeatedly throwing the rock against the house.
