with one hand forward on the grip (a rather natural grip), the forward hand's shoulder should dip slightly when chopping directly in front of you. as the placement of the chop moves toward the side that dips the shoulder would dip less, until the hand is in front of that shoulder (straight out from the shoulder at a 90 degree angle to the body), any further would be unnatural. once the arms go straight (at around shoulder height) they stay straight. as the swing goes down below waist level, if you are still chopping/going to chop whatever you need to chop then you slide one foot back and bend the other leg in order to drop your waist level while angling your body forward slightly so that you can still get down to where you need to get to. long story short (too late), hoodoo needs to have her arms straight just like you said, though she is falling through the air (which is not something which is generally done when chopping through stuff, except in fantasy settings, like magellan).
