I hope I’m telling this well. A tug or fishing boat has its screw deep underwater and it has water intakes to cool it engine. If that gets fouled the motor will overheat. That and the screw trying to push through the sludge make them in effective. The Tug Crow and old obsolete side wheel tug has all its equipment bore the water line. It can push through plants and such. In the early 1990’s and 1890’a Florida inland shipping was still being propelled be stern wheelers and side wheelers because of plant infestation. I think it was hibiscus if I’m not mistaken. No screw driven boat could expect to transit the plant infested waters. I watched a home made pontoon boat powered by paddle wheels. It was running through Lilly pads! Anyway this little paddle-wheeler is very inconvenient for our heroes.
