Now William can start the rest of his life. :)

I did have a few clues in the comic early on that the ending would have to be a happy one.
In chapter three, when Tiffany noticed that William wasn't crying even at his father's grave, William said that after his dad's death and seeing his brother die soon after that “nothing could top that for tears”. And, in the same chapter, Tiffany's old wive's tale tells that the drought could end with tears of sorrow or of happiness.
Since nothing could top his sadness, the only logical ending would be that something really good had to happen to him.

Here in the picture I included all the things that they saved each other with; the two sets of dog tags, the ribbon and the rifle. ^.^
