D. did not have many friendly people in his life, Jemma definitely does not have a single friend. The only people friendly with her do it either out of distant politeness, or are fake friends who want a piece of her family fortune. D. is unapporachable due to his nature, Jemma is unapproachable due to her circumstances.
It is really not that suprising she turned out the way she did. And that these two emotionally stunted wrecks formed a strange type of bond over time.
