@bravo 1102: She is directing some of the magical wind into the prop-blades to do just that. The ticking sound is the spark plug. Alternatively, she could have done into a dive, but that would've been risky with all of those crazy rock spires all over the place. The only thing I am not clear about is whether or not turboprops require variable-pitch prop blades. I didn't include that detail because I am lazy.

@Sway: I liked the idea of a world where there is magic, but it is so weak that it needs to be complemented by mechanical devices. Or the idea of a post-technological society, where industry gradually gets replaced by sorcery.

Love the vtol biplane. Actually you can start a propeller by going into the wind and letting the wind spin the prop. I saw it done on a C-130 cargo turboprop.

I really like the use of magic as a means to get the plane airborne, and then kicking over to a mechanical power source. That kind of "practical fantastic" is one of my favorite concepts to see creators tackle, especially in the sci-fi/fantasy genres.
