i thought of a realistic situation for that (still bad parenting) the parent leaves their baby alone at work and goes to the store to buy something, figuring it will be ok alone for just a "little while". They come back they find the apartment on fire. This reminds me this time I worked at retail... a woman brought in her dog because it was a really hot day and she didn't want it dying in the car, she explained that as it peed on the floor, another woman asked us to hurry it up because she left her newborn baby in the car.
