Page 11 Mum is not impressed!

I've seen quite a few LGBT movies over the years and those concerning gender almost always have a scene of the young person being seen as the opposite sex for the first time with shock/horror! It's quite true and something you never tend to forget!
About a month ago I discovered an old Brit movie called ‘I want what I want’ made in 1972 and based on a book of the same name. It's free to watch on YouTube if anyone is interested and shows pretty much what Nikki will be facing in future chapters!
Have a nice week!

Yeah. It's not fair. Double standard.

I wonder if the reaction is because knowing or suspecting who Nikki is at heart.

Quite possibly!

The truly sad part is: it's fine for a girl to wear boys' clothes, and even adult women are expected to wear variations of men's clothes, but a boy to wear girls clothes? or worse, a full grown adult male wearing women's dresses? It's almost a criminal act and justification for beating them to a pulp!!

DV: That is very true and I can't help feeling it indicates how strongly society conditions children as they grow up.

As sad as this was, and as hard as it was to recall your Mother not supporting you, she was doing what she felt was best and it's sad that they didn't want you to dress up as a hero who's outlook on the world should be emulated by everyone. The elation of being comfortable in your skin, and honestly happy with how you looked in the mirror, let alone just moving around. It's heartbreaking to see it suddenly stolen away (not that greeting Nikki's father as 'Wonder Woman' would do much for your ability to sit comfortably if we read his type correctly) but remember, in her own way, Mommy was trying to protect her child. And, there is a hope as noted shown at the end. Escaping into your own world of art and make-believe! A place a great number of us know all too well.

That's a very good point. Most parents don't like to see a child suffer, especially their own! I was only watching the true story of Teena Brandon again last week which highlights that parental fear very clearly! My mother has always been very caring but she doesn't get dysphoria at all, whereas my dad would be the sort to put me down in a bad mood, poke fun in a good mood, yet deep down probably not have cared what I did. There was an incident in my youth when my mum felt very offended by the owner of a holiday cottage who mistakenly thought I was a girl, yet years later it was my father that said I should have been born a girl during one of our closer moments.

This page was really sad. It may seem trivial but such moments carry a big sense of despair for a child. And it really is not fair. As another commenter has said, I'm glad Nikki has the ability to draw at her disposal.

Edniz: When I wrote my editorial for this page I was going to say how indelibly these moments become etched into our memories as it's quite a shock to realise what you thought was so normal upsets the adult world. I had two such incidents and the next will be the one that finishes this chapter. There is something very special about drawing too as a therapy. Writing helps enormously too but somehow putting images from your own mind onto paper has a magical quality of it's own no matter how rough the art.

Not a film I'm familiar with, I'll give it a watch. Another great page, panel three is a well judged, beautiful close up and panel five a sad contrast to the previous uplifting mirror images. The emotion of these scenes really comes across, but you finish on a note of optimism with Misty - what a fab comic that was!
skyangel at 9:11AM, March 25, 2024
Ironscarf: I think it's a film that would probably only interest people with gender dysphoria and the transwoman is played by a natural born woman which also made it feel a little strange to me so I'd forgive anyone for giving up on it who didn't relate! Misty was a very last minute thought, I drew a blank comic on the floor for no particular reason and then realised it needed some sort of cover but I recalled how much I loved the art and stories in Misty so it felt nice to use that!

The ability to draw helps a lot.

It does indeed! I often feel somewhat detached from my own finished artwork, but the space my mind is in as I create it feels very real and exciting.
