Page 13 A strange feeling
skyangel on April 6, 2024
This is the last page of chapter one and thanks to all those who have subscribed and supported this comic with your comments etc. so far! It does seem kind of strange doing this at times and I do wonder if I should have just stuck to doing short six page stories instead but at the same time I feel that I have something to share that perhaps never will be if I don't commit this one to paper now.
Next week we begin chapter two and find out just how Sarah comes into young Nikki's life!

That question haunts many of us, for one reason or another.

Almost missed the string art: believe those were almost compulsory in those days, we had one an abstract one with multi-coloured string on a black board :)

DV: At the time they seemed so normal and it almost felt like every home had one in some place but that's before I became aware that fads come and go!

I love this page; it contains the simplicity of how children question the world. I feel Nikki's last statement; I'm a girl that accepted the concept of dresses as something the adults mostly wanted me to wear; it would have been the same type of 'i dont get it but ok' if they made me wear a clown costume or dress as a panda (though the panda would be much more fun than the other two). I don't like dresses much in reality so I sort of wondered if I was weird for not being on par with the adult's idea of me. I think I only liked a few styles in my life.

Gemi! Lovely to see you again! I do think dresses are impractical and if I had to wear one all day I think I'd probably look forward to wearing jeans or leggings the next! Actually with age I have found tops and skirts far more preferable to dresses anyway as they allow for more versatility and interesting combinations as well as easier to change if the weather turns. It's strange though how feeling pressured to wear a dress has the opposite effect of being told you mustn't wear one! XD

I've been thinking about this page since Saturday, not sure what I wanted to say because it seem such a powerful and pivotal moment. I suppose that in itself is a comment though. It's perfectly judged and a fitting end to the first chapter, thank you for sharing this with us. And you found time to put in some string art too, plus a belisha beacon!

Ironscarf: It's interesting to read the reactions to this page because I hadn't really thought that much about it apart from it seeming like a suitable place to end. It was a pivotal moment for sure because I was trying to figure out why adults were telling me not to do something that seemed so harmless.___ I think the string art was actually in their lounge and of a sailboat but it was a popular decor at the time so I felt it had to be included XD

That last comment is something that we believe a lot of children think of. For every one of us that is different in some way, there are people that will point it out and make it a 'thing'. The earlier page is interesting to say the least, the way Linda's Mom deals with finding Nick in her daughters dress. She's awful calm about it and simply sending him home sounds more like, 'go home before you make a mess of that outfit young man.' at least to some of us. Especially love the easy interaction between the two young people, acceptance right off, not judging, not questioning... Just, this is you and you're my friend, so this is normal. Thanks as always for the lovely page.

UBH: You nailed it on both counts! :) I grew up pre-internet so my world was very small and dysphoria wasn't even a term I was aware of at that age. Linda's mum was a nice lady and if it hadn't been that particular dress she might have been okay with it but her reaction mirrored my mothers which left it's impact which is why I finished the page with a question rather than a statement. And thanks to you too as always for your really thoughtful and understanding comments, they are always so encouraging!

This is the usual but the wrong question. (The answer to the usual and wrong question is: Look around, pal! Do you see another boy walking around and wearing girl's clothing?) - The correct question is: Is there something wrong?
skyangel at 2:59PM, April 7, 2024
Exactly!
HawkandFloAdventures at 11:02AM, April 6, 2024
There's nothing wrong with you kid. Some boys like dresses just ask the Scottish ;)
HawkandFloAdventures at 3:48PM, April 7, 2024
Maybe he'll run into Sarah And Jameun ;p
skyangel at 2:58PM, April 7, 2024
Haha He needs to move to Scotland! :)
