As always, thanks for the comments, everyone!
Julio's first attempt at this page is something I'd like to include in the trade paperback collection. No doubt: the splash page you see above IS more appropriate and, as Julio notes, has more impact than what he initially drew.
However, Julio's first attempt at this page showed Beth and Ted's reaction to Roger's evil reveal, and the two characters look like they've crapped in their pants! It's a wonderful depiction. And I'd like to include it in the TPB as "Page 19A".
Anyway, this is the page where editor Egg Embry REALLY put me through the wringer. I revised Roger's shout on this page AT LEAST 5 times before Egg was satisfied. In fact, Egg's reaction to my first draft of this page was, "Hey Keith, who did you steal this dialogue from? Ed Wood?"
Ouch! My editor compared me to Ed Wood, widely considered the WORST film director in the history of cinema. Double Ouch!
I understood what Egg was trying to do. He was prodding me to do better. He wanted to make sure I wasn't going to take the easy way out and just throw in some cheesy line that anyone could have written. He kept telling me that Roger needs to say something here that ONLY Roger would say.
I forget what Roger's original shout was for this page. Something like, "I want everyone's head on a platter!" or "Have at them, my minions!" or something like that.
I have no idea if I successfully revised Roger's line here, but I feel Roger is more "in character" with this line than with the other lines I wrote.
By the way, how friggin' creepy is that first zombie in the foreground? Wow!
This was the second attempt doing this page. The first attempt had two panels and lacked strength; fortunatelly, I was requested to re-do it.
We now know who the villain is. But issue 2 is not done, just wait until Mack arrives and c what happens! Totally UNEXPECTED!!
