1310. The Meg

I am a fan of the book series The Meg is based on and have waited for the movie for about 15 years and I wasn't disappointed. I thought the movie was fun. I was okay with most of the changes (despite them taking out the three coolest scenes in the book), but what Deadpool is talking about is a headscratcher.

The Tanaka family is Japanese in the book. There's Terry and DJ, who are brother and sister, and Masao Tanaka (their father). The movie, to appease their Chinese backers (I'm guessing) made the Tanakas Chinese instead of Japanese and renamed them to match their new nationality. DJ was left Japanese, but he got a name change and someone else got his name. I don't understand that at all.

I thought maybe he was an unrelated character, but no…the character serves the same purpose, but because he's no longer Terry's brother and Masao's son, the emotional stuff with him is greatly diminished.
