Oh, if you all look back to the comic The Dojima Ultimatum, you'll see Nanako holding the letter here. I guess she handed it to him before he left :P

Goodwill might be a stretch, but by this point in the story, his 'game' was over, and he didn't have much to gain. It kind of felt that without Amenosagiri's influence, he sort of woke up from a daze and regained whatever vague shreads of humanity he may have had trained into him. Plus, I always thought that it was more curiousity and wanting to know the truth in retrospect that caused him to write the letter. Or even if he didn't ever know, at least SOMEONE would see it through and pursue what he couldn't behind bars. I always got the impression that Adachi actually WAS a bright man and COULD have potentially been a great detective if he hadn't 'made a mistake and got sent out to the boonies' or however he put being transfered to Inaba. He sort of gave up after that and stopped caring. Now, what the 'mistake' is is curious in itself. Did he do something reckless and violent to get put out of the area, or was it actually a mistake? ...Heh, I'm digging too much.
