Nope, they start off in Kanto and Red and Green get different pokemon. Hence the word - common. Don't worry, I'm not gonna copy every single comic that had that 'cliche' storyline.

So Red gets a totodile and Green gets a chikorita, then they go do 8 gyms with their friend gold, then team rocket steps in wanting some legendary pokemon they fight for a good 20 pages and... DONE! Seriously, do we really have to see this beginning again, it's really getting old.
