Yeah. I find it works very well for placing sprites, since you can put something in front of something else without erasing what's underneath. It's not new photoshop though, it's from years ago.
in photoshop, make a blank layer and trace the pokemon in white (or red if they're being returned), fill it in, and adjust the transparency until it looks good.
