Watermelon

As I mentioned, today is a holiday here in Japan. So, you’s get a special holiday comic!
Almost all fruit is extremely over-priced here, and each year it just keeps getting worse! The most expansive fruit I’ve seen was a mango.. yes, a mango, it was over $200 US! But, I guess if people throw their money away on very expensive fruit…
Please don’t forget, if you have any questions about Japan, PQ me and I will eventually answer it in Japan Q&A.

I knew fruit was expensive over there (especially Watermelon), but $100? Geez!
toaddude13 at 3:06AM, Jan. 6, 2008
well i would pay that but only if it show why the hell they're square, anyway funny
flyingwind66 at 8:43PM, Oct. 14, 2007
holy crud!!!! it's that expensive for FRUIT??? I don't understand! fruit is like.. the cheapest thing over here!
SilverWordz at 8:45AM, Oct. 2, 2007
O_O I mean I like fruit... but $200 for a mango!!! And I get upset when watermelon cost more the $5. I dunno where Masq is buying Cantaloupe for .79 either. They're $3 where I shop. Personally I'd rather shop at a farmer's market and pay the farmer directly, but around here there are no farmers markets.

To think they smack 'em there. Daggum.
RushtonCygnus at 2:26PM, Sept. 19, 2007
Oh the Japanese and thier frivolous mellons....
junglebean at 2:02PM, Sept. 19, 2007
Wow~ They were only $10-20 in Korea. That's why I'm a Seoul man. How much are the big, atomic apples now days?
supermathsbeaver at 5:20AM, Sept. 19, 2007
At those prices how come the Japanese don't all have scurvy?
n_y_japlander at 2:55AM, Sept. 19, 2007
MASQ you are correct!! They also grow pyramid shaped watermelons as well... (^-^)
Masq at 12:54AM, Sept. 19, 2007
I think I have a plausable explanation for the square watermellon. It was grown in a square container and took that shape as it grew. Hey, it'd make for some nice slices, and I've heard weirder. A guy in Montana used DNA splicing to create square corn so his butter wouldn't slide off it.

What's more crazy 100 dollars for a piece of fruit or 2000 dollars for some fisheggs from the Red Sea?
anyism at 7:34AM, Sept. 18, 2007
!
dantheman at 4:33PM, Sept. 17, 2007
i like watermelon, but I don't like it that much even if it is square
worstcase at 2:30PM, Sept. 17, 2007

StewWriter at 12:02PM, Sept. 17, 2007
I've heard about this! Just astounding!
dracco at 11:08AM, Sept. 17, 2007
Oh, boy!
Ersatz at 10:42AM, Sept. 17, 2007
That is just mental!
TheMidge28 at 8:04AM, Sept. 17, 2007
Wow! that's is crazy! and why is it square? Is this for asthetics? And how do they grow that? Must be the need for things to look they are from a super mario video game! If fruit is so expensive is the diet then very poor in Japan? This has me asking tons a questions...feel free to use any of them for Japan Q and A...Ha!
crocty at 7:56AM, Sept. 17, 2007
Although, I'm guessing wages are higher...right?
antcomics at 7:35AM, Sept. 17, 2007
WOWW! I love watermelon. I couldn't live there!! :oO
Insizwa at 5:06AM, Sept. 17, 2007
TOO MUCH!!
n_y_japlander at 1:37AM, Sept. 17, 2007
I MUST note... not all the watermelons are square here, this was a samlep of the high priced brand watermelo. Although, most of the standard melons will run you over $20 US. The cheapest one I have seen, was a quarter cut melon for around $10 !!! The whole melon was $30 !!
crocty at 12:16AM, Sept. 17, 2007
Whoa...People buy them?...
Peipei at 12:15AM, Sept. 17, 2007
oh my goodness o.o that's crazy. you can get like 200 of those watermelons for that amount in the states. Although I dont think thats pretty awesome that its shaped like a square :3
Masq at 11:27PM, Sept. 16, 2007
Well, I suppose it's better than here in the states. If you ask the farmers, the price of fruits and veggies isn't high enough. If a cantalope is $0.79, imagine what that farmer is being paid. No, I'm not a farmer, but I work in a grocery store and the subject comes up often. But a hundred dollars for a watermellon?! ...wait, it's in season, isn't it?
