Reminder: If you haven't checked it out since New Year's, we've posted a new page in the BVC Scrap Book. Go and have a look - it's got bad men with guns and stuff!
Blenheim: Thanks. "Quirky" is one of those traits we Brits cherish, so I'll take that as high praise indeed. Welcome to Shades!
Alana: Thanks. Actually "backlash" is a little dramatic! I've had virtually nothing but positive reactions to Sunil until now, so I was amused when someone highlighted him as the one character he didn't like (accompanied by a nice comment on the comic as a whole and a nice PQ, I should add!) and couldn't help calling it a backlash when I received (*gasp!*) a second!
Huh, I hadn't noticed the anti-Sunil backlash. I actually really like him, and I suspect (given the Shaman telling Stanley to talk to his daughter) that he's more central to the story than it seems.
I also love the last panel. The characters in Shades tend to have a very gritty look, which I think works well for the storytelling, but it's refreshing to see one of the characters lose their hard edges.
Ed: Oooh, the anti-Sunil backlash is gathering momentum! Thanks for the advice. I shall approach the bread counter with renewed confidence from now on!
Sky: Thanks! Although it inevitably gets wilder later on, I did very consciously try to keep things as "domestic" as possible for as long as I could, so as to keep the story grounded in reality. (Well, as close to reality as a super hero story can be!) Oh, and I suspect the post is delivered by a post-woman to this particular estate!
;-)
Thank you for a great read!
I like this comic a lot. The gritty art style, the pacing of the story... all advanced stuff.
I'm not too fond of Sunil either, but I recognise him as a good story moving device. I really like the old man, though...
Keep up the good work. If I could give you some good advice I would have.... uhm ok here's one: Read the expiry date of bread before you buy it! ^_^
well i'm sick of being called bryan....can i change my name to larry or something?
(my name is byron, everyone on this planet, except for other byron's are dislexic)
Space: Thanks! It's not often super heroes have someone non-super trying to tell them what they can or can't do, is it? Alfred springs to mind but that's probably about it ... ! (Oh, and we'll be revealing more interiors from Boo's luxurious abode in the next chapter!)
one: Thanks, but ... you don't like Sunil?! Wow - I think you're in the minority. He seems pretty popular around here! (Although, to be honest, I'm not crazy about other people's kids, either!)
JMT: Thanks. She's got a nice smile, too!
Man, this page is so awesome on so many levels... the superheroine coming back inside from a fight to a run-down kitchen and getting yelled at for wearing her costume, the continued covering up of the past... excellent.
well, this is fantastic. i just read the whole thing for the first time and i'm definitely into the story.
i can't stand sunil one bit. but that should come as a compliment to you, as you have been able to capture and annoying little kid just perfectly.
well done, and faved.
Bustah: Kinda weird, huh? Let's hope the damn fool writer remembers to explain how that could possibly be, at some point! ;-)
Popen: Oh, I'm sure she can do cute, too!
Adam: Aren't they all? ;-)
Abt: Hold that thought - you aren't going to see any firm "developments" on either the BBC illness or this power plant protest until much further down the line. (And I hope you haven't forgotten about that rock in the Prologue either ... *sigh!* so many threads to tie up, so few chapters!)
Trevor/Villamar: Thanks, guys!
Midge: Actually there was never intended to be any drama surrounding the mask so, no, we didn't intentionally ignore it! I wanted the mask removed to show that Boo is now "at home" - comfortable surrounded by her own people. I suspect it looked more meaningful than it was, just because the panel fell at the end of a page!

I don't think he's quite realized that she's a real-life superhero yet.
SympleSymon at 8:01AM, Jan. 28, 2008
...you'd think he'd know this, the amount of superhero comics he's read. Maybe the traumatising experience is to blame?

Oh what a lovely surprise this comic is. The characters are quirky, and not all young and buff, but people. Lovely work, can't wait for the next page.

I love the way you bring everything down to a realistic homely level!! I can almost imagine the postman popping in for a cuppa! And such great art!

Weird alias Boo is, makes her sound cute instead of hardcore. ^^
