I can cite historical sources about Eisenhower, Truman and George C. Marshall that indicate in all likelihood they would have pushed for Hunter to get the recognition due him. Remember that the most decorated US combat unit was Japanese. But then other folks would have wanted to err on the side of caution and wait until after the war probably around the time the armed forces were desegregated by Truman.
No matter how "woke" those individuals were, WW2 era america wasn't. This was a Jim Crowe country from sea to shining sea at that time. As a student of history you should know that. Listen, I don't want get too deep in the politics of WW2 america or to give the next page(s) away by telling any spoilers now, so lets talk again when the next page drops. :) Dee - SC writer dude
As a veteran and a student of history you don't have to remind me. In 1988 I saw racism in uniform and fought against it. No one else would stand up against it and I did.
I wrote this long response to your post and then I deleted it because I don't want to get into a political conversation over a comicbook set in a time where racial tolerance and acceptance didn't exist. It was a hurdle I knew I'd have to leap setting this comic in WW2 era america with a black man as it's hero. I just hope that at the end you and everyone else who reads Sky Commander think that I cleared the hurdle. And, as a black man myself, I don't know if faced with the same choices as Duster will be, that I would have been as selfless and chosen the greater good. Because the greater good always means someone has to sacrifice. And when your life is nothing but sacrifice (like black folks lives were back then) sometimes you just need to win one. Nuff said. Totally unlike what really happened with the SOE and OSS. The enemy finds out and they target you. Also by not revealing the one, can build up the myth that there's a whole pile of them.

You don't think nazis would stand out just a little bit in Harlem? Dee - SC writer dude

No, they want the new hero to remain under cover until the war is over.
