Stop pressing so hard
or choose a pencil that has a harder consistency then normal lead.
regular pencils usually come as number 2 pencils aka HB
(Hard/Bold) Hard pencils usually come out lighter though.
Try looking into something that is H, 3H, 4H, etc
you can get those at art supply stores. If you use mechanical pencils, some places offer alternative types of lead as refills.
Hmmm I had that problem. I keep pushing down a lot and I never had any work done. Ha. Switching to pen would be handy. Although there is also the issue of messing up and not being able to erase it..hmm.

I always do pencil then draw over it with pen.
