In pre-modern times some whiskey considered a restorative tonic and it was called “aqua vitae” or “water of life” . It would be carried in a flask to take a swig to restore the senses or stiffen the nerve. A sip refreshes, a swig kills. It wasn't easy to make and it wasn't easy to drink to excess. That came later once it became easy to make and cheap.
