Some Early Medieval facts of life. Though this is a fantasy I used a liberal dose of history. I am a savvy enough student of history where I can pick apart conglomerate fantasy cultural creations. Most leave a real bad taste in my mouth. So I play it straight. Call it creative laziness or just that I don't want to create a bunch of new silly names. Would it be any better if I went through some linguistic somersaults and called Mongols for example Donghu or Xiong?
I like Vikings and Norse Vikings they will remain. Ragnar identifies the guy as Hengist Egillson. Jarl Egill was one of the leaders of the invasion and Halfdan Egillson was mentioned earlier by King Falkimir. They just might be brothers.
This page again has lots of talk because the original had a few more panels cluttering up the page. The original draft for Go a Viking! done as wide page width frames on top of one another rather than panel on a page. The narrative didn't flow. It was my first comic and there was and is lots to learn.
I never pictured Vikings as terribly sentimental sorts. I think they just had a completely different outlook on life than we do today. Life is short, violent death is almost a certainty, so why get too caught up about it?
Even if you called them some completely made up name, it probably translates to the equivalent of Mongol or Viking in their language, so I guess it's sort of pointless unless you're doing the whole comic in native tongue with subtitles.
Well I like how you're mixing history with the fantasy - works great!! It's good to see this viking have a stirring of sympathy and sorrow for what his men did!! Maybe he'll get the chance to make up for... a little (nothing totally makes up for losing family)
Ragnar is over forty so a little sympathy has seeped in. He's ancient for a Viking. Actually most statistics on pre-modern life expectancy are skewed by high childhood mortality. Once you reached 30 it was more than likely you'd make 40 and so on.

They were fatalistic and some were even cynical but Ragnar has lived long enough his point of view has evolved. It will be explained later why.

Life was nasty in those times and places. Had to do what you did to survive.

Lot of real humanity going on here. (And I'm always sad when the strumpets go away)

Thank you. The strumpets will be back.
