The shop that Edmund is running into is partially based on on the place I worked at the time. Leavitt & Peirce is a traditional tobacconist shop in Harvard Square that has been open since 1883. Although the wooden Indian in the front is no longer there, they do have some old photos inside the shop of what it used to look like. It was a fun place to work, especially since I used to smoke at the time, and got to sample every kind of tobacco they carried.
If you happen to be in Cambridge MA, I recommend you check out the store. Most of the hand-drawn signs I made for them are still in use throughout the store.

Great idea to use a real place as inspiration. Leavitt & Peirce seems like a magical place - in your comic and in the real world.
