The last panel was remade and the page was updated. The previous version was historically inaccurate. The windows tax was not established by the ancien regime. Intead, it was a tax introduced by the Directory. I would like to thank @bravo1102 for pointing this out and I would also like to apologize to our readers. It is very important to us that our story is historically accurate as the subject matter is not one that can be taken lightly.

But like the Da Vinci Files or even Shakespeare never ever let pedantic adherence to historical accuracy get in the way of a good story.

Except that the windows tax was instituted in 1798 during the Directory and then again in 1830 under the Restoration. I've studied the French Revolution in detail and I was like huh? The tax system of the Ancien Regime was pretty awful but the assessments at most were only incidentally about windows as a guide to house size. There was lots of property and individual taxes farmed from the non-privileged classes leading to unrest but not specifically windows. The infamous window tax was British starting in 1696 under William and Mary which led to a lot of griping that often ended up in heated Parliamentarian debate. But the tax wasn't repealed until the 1850s in Britain. It is also a myth that a windows tax ever existed in the American colonies. Or at least no such legislation exists on the records of colonial and early state legislation.
