Well, we are in a fantasy realm so anything's possible, I guess. He could be undead or simply be wearing a magical ward of some description. I'm going to plump for him being a magic wielder of some kind. Or in the service of one ...!

Well considering the back of his skull is still intact, I'd venture a guess and say he's dead and in the realm of the dead. All the broken buildings and the creepy pile of bones behind him seem to point to that in my opinion. Either way, an astounding page! Leyland's scared emotion mixes wonderfully with the chilling, omnipotent dialog. This scene literally sent a little shiver of fear down my spine. I never felt sorry for Leyland in life, but now I really can't help but feel some sympathy with him in death. I'd be terrified too....

I like the 'personal hell' theory. Otherwise I suppose that it could be a sort of 'realm of the dead'.
