As someone who hasn't played any of the FF games, I had to look up what materia was. Yes, the orbs look like the materia, but they do function more similar to the Infinity Stones on Thanos' glove. Once I'm completely done with the Faceless Comics, I'm gonna put a list of all the easter eggs and references hidden within the series. There, I'll include what the orbs did as well as an English translation for that shelf full of them.
