So I've read on the forum that The Duck is very dormant these days, but I have to say that having multiple comments per page is not something I had experienced when debuting on other websites. Maybe it ain't much, but it is to me, goddammit! :P
I'm myself new to this site as well, joined just a few months back. I find The Duck so far to be one of the few open, balanced and diverse artistic sites on the web. Other sites, like DeviantArt, I find either too restrictive or too overbloated and/or entirely focused with fandom related art and storytelling (furry fandom, videogames, manga etc) that usually gets most of the limelight on these art sites, leaving very little room for original creation, innovative creation, or creation that at the very least isn't riding on a bandwagon or toying with what is already established. Also the podcast on this site, the Quackcast, is some chill stuff to listen to and at times inspiring(Y)
I'm sure that was the case. I haven't really been that much of an active part of any community on the web so far. It's just the overall impression I get when I visit some sites nowadays and what I hear from other sources. I heard people used to hate Elfwood back in the day, which as far as I know seems to be long dead and buried now, but I remember it being okay back when it was still active. People gave me good feedback on the pieces I uploaded there and I generally liked what I saw being uploaded on the site back then.
I don't want to sound too drastic, but I have a feeling DeviantArt has gone down to shit lately. Or was it always like this? I've been a member for many years and I recall the site being better regarding community interactions.
