The Page of Mangled Perspectives. I don't know what I was doing (maybe I put too much Crown Royal in my Sprite), but I can't believe I got so many perspectives, angles, and vanishing points wrong. Starting with the floor lines in the first panel, and culminating in the last big panel. The two ends of the table aren't parallel, and none of the table edges line up with the lines on the floor. It looks like a funhouse! The right corner of the tables seems like it's crashing. The floor lines themselves stray from each other, and none of it meshes with the far left alcove where those kids are eating.
.
Well, all I can do it laugh at it now. I just wasn't paying attention. I did each piece individually - instead of making the whole thing work. Oh well… I'll be more aware next time.
.
This is the last page of this chapter. It's the best situation Kimber Lee's been in for a long while, but it's still precarious. Maybe best to not sing ‘Home on the Range’ just yet…
.
Thanks for Reading Everyone :)

Apart from the nearest end of the table which clearly fights with the lines on the floor I wouldn't have noticed anything greatly amiss. It's still a wonderful shot and works well so I'm glad you persevered with it. What I love most about it is the feeling it gives of being up on the cieling looking down which made me feel like I was floating! XD

@FC: Thanks! Good advice! I'll try very hard to consider an entire panel 'holistically' from now on, starting with horizons and vanishing points.
fallopiancrusader at 9:16PM, March 27, 2014
If you are drawing without references, then getting your global mechanical perspective laid out before you draw anything specific will save you a boatload of trouble down the road. You have a good intuitive grasp of perspective (probably from drawing from all those photos), but all the elements in the panels are following their own coordinate systems. If you always start with your horizon and vanishing points first, then everything will line up.

@FC: Thanks for your help. Well, I don't use a tablet at all except for enhancing hues and saturation. All my 'layouts', such as they be, I do directly on watercolor paper using light pencil. However, this time I neglected to do the bottom floor lines in pencil at all (bad move - won't happen again). The other, lesser ones (like the table ends and that alcove), I simply wasn't paying attention. I've painted for years with acrylic and can do pretty well with that if I go sloooow and am referencing something (a photo), but for this comic, I wanted to learn speed more than anything and also just pull images out of my head to draw, without any references - so sometimes the finished product shows just that: I'm learning haha. All those art objects? I just think of something, usually, although I saw a similar image for inspiration for that cactus one.

How are you laying out your perspectives? Once you have your underlying grid measured out, all three of those panels should be pretty straightforward. Though they are full of a lot of objects, which can be time- consuming to plot out. Some of your vanishing points would be very far away, which might be difficult to keep track of if your drawing table is small. If you are very persnickety about the relative scale of objects throughout the story, you might try making models of your major assets in Google sketch-up. It's a free 3D program that's very easy and non- technical to use. Getting a 3D underlay also helps with laying out very crowded scenes. By the way, I love all the objets d'art in your interior designs. I'm intrigued by the big painting on the right wall in panel 3.

@Panman: Thanks! Yeah, I get why not many attempt them haha
Panman at 6:48PM, March 26, 2014
I like this page. Not many comic artists would even attempt those tricky high-angle and perspective shots.

@bravo1102: Haha, maybe not, but I will get a lot better :) Yeah, when I look at the renderings I've done of the front of the house, and then compare with the inside; the big staircase, this dining room, I don't think it will all fit. The inside is bigger than the outside - maybe it's a magic dream house haha. Those sort of discrepancies do bother me, though, and I'll correct them if I ever redraw this thing (and try harder to watch out for them in future pages)

@Plymayer: Basically it ends ambiguously, with them going entering the elevator and doors close. The 'feel good' ending was added weeks after full filming was done as a sort of 'panic' thing. Great movie in all versions - Roy Batty's 'Tears on the Rain' speech may be my favorite movie lines of all time.

The table does look wonky. So you'll never be a Renaissance painter. Only the table is noticeable. But that is one big dining room. Too big? I know you're trying to do a pull out with the voice over, but somehow the layout it isn't working for me. Looks too much like the inside of a castle as opposed to Southwestern rancho style. Or I've been watching too much White Queen and Game of Thrones.

Not sure if I've ever seen the director's cut of Blade Runner. What is the difference? I remember that line at the end. Loved the movie. Never read the book (heard it was better).

@Peipei: Thanks! Yeah, maybe for just a little while - She certainly deserves a moment of peace

Nice page, it's good to see everyone together in this scene. I guess for now, Kim is just gonna have to live for the moment, however long that may be. :(
KimLuster at 8:17AM, March 25, 2014
@Plymayer: indeed, such a thought is the one thing I like about the original added-on ending soliloquy to Blade Runner (one of my fave movies of all time) - still prefer Director's cut ending, though :) @Banes: Thanks so much! That's the kind of comment that makes one eager to do more pages! :)
Banes at 7:41AM, March 25, 2014
What a page! Great ending for the chapter, and I can't wait to see where it's gonna go after this (I have no idea!). The great thing is that if you care about the characters (which I do in this comic, big time), that matters far more than perfect perspective. I like the Crown Royal in the Sprite theory, though. XD

Who knows how long any of us have?
